Interior minister says political situation will be clear in next 72 hours

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad on Monday said he was unaware of any letter – a possession of evidence with Prime Minister Imran Khan pertaining to the foreign conspiracy – and reiterated to talk about matters known to him.

“I heard last night that [Foreign Minister] Shah Mahmood Qureshi talked about a letter [about the foreign conspiracy against Pakistan]. I don’t know anything about that. I will never in my life talk about things of which I am unaware,” he said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad.

PM Imran on Sunday at the party’s power show at the federal capital’s parade ground alleged that attempts were made through foreign money to change the government and the people were being used. “Mostly inadvertently, but some people are using money against us. We know from what places attempts are being to pressure us. We have been threatened in writing but we will not compromise on national interest,” he said, adding that the letter was proof of his claim.

The premier had taken the cue from Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who had earlier claimed to have communicated “a lot of secrets” to him. PM Imran had added that he would share many things about the foreign conspiracy which will be shared very soon.

To a query over the apparent role of the establishment in the country’s politics, the interior minister said the country’s armed forces were a “symbol of integrity” and the institution worked for the betterment of the country. “Whatever decision it [military] will take will be in the interest of Pakistan,” he said, adding that the establishment was with Pakistan.

Vote on no-confidence motion likely on April 4: Rashid

“I have told you the decision will be taken on March 29, 30, and 31 on the no-confidence motion,” he added, “The decision will be taken within 72 hours.”

To another query over security institutions' role in the apparent conspiracy, the interior minister said that he was not a spokesperson of the country’s institutions and advised the reporter to attend the Inter-Services Public Relations meeting and ask the same question.

Rashid, who is famous for his political prophecies, added that the situation could be different even one hour before the motion.

On the no-confidence motion against Punjab CM Usman Buzdar in the Punjab Assembly, Rashid said he had advised Premier Imran to conduct elections after Hajj and dissolve the provincial assembly. He had also suggested the need for imposing an emergency in the country and governor rule in Sindh in view of the horse-trading allegations.

“I want democracy to continue in this country even if it’s weak,” Rashid said and feared any untoward situation.

The interior minister said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has been given the NOC for Monday (today)’s public gathering in Islamabad and the permission given to the JUI-F was ended.

He called for a social boycott of turncoats, labelling them as blackmailers, adding that such attempts are aimed at weakening the country.
