The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf's efforts to bring former prime minister Nawaz Sharif back to Pakistan based on his medical records haven't borne fruit, local daily Dawn reported, as they haven't been able to find any such records despite applying pressure on his brother and current opposition leader in NA Shehbaz Sharif.

According to the report, the kind of medical reports that the government is looking for may not be available because they do not exist. Nawaz is yet to undergo any procedure that the doctors might have recommended for him, it states citing those close to the Sharif family.

Nawaz was advised to undergo some procedures for the heart, which weren’t without risks, insiders told the publication, while the pandemic also made things worse in the UK, where all non-urgent surgical procedures were postponed.

According to Punjab Health Minister Yasmin Rashid, however, if Nawaz could be without treatment for two years and survive solely on medication, he should be healthy enough to travel back to the country.

The health minister was an important part of the process that enabled Nawaz to travel for the necessary medical procedures and has also been keeping tabs on his health to ensure that the former premier returns to Pakistan so that he can be face trial in Pakistan.

Rashid also pointed out that the procedure Nawaz needed could be performed in Pakistan but they had allowed him to leave as he preferred to get the procedure done in the UK.

The PML-N leader has been in the UK since November 2019, when he was undergoing diagnostic tests to determine the next course of cardiac intervention. But due to complications related to his blood, they had also considered taking him to the US then.

According to the report, it was unclear why Nawaz did not undergo the required procedures from January to March 2020 prior to the lockdown in the UK due to the pandemic.

It has been learnt that Nawaz has complicated cardiac as well as blood-related issues and has undergone two major heart related procedures in 2010 and 2016. He also experienced low platelet count in 2019, a condition known as thrombocytopenia, prompting the government to let him travel for treatment. It seems he will not be returning to Pakistan without the third surgery he was prescribed, while his family may also not be keen on him undergoing any procedures in the country.

According to reports, Nawaz’s passport has also expired, making his travel even more complicated than it already is.
