Government has decided to elect Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue, Shaukat Tarin to Senate from a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa seat, according to Aaj News.

Aaj News was quoting sources when it said that PTI senator Ayub Afridi from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has resigned from his position and will be appointed as adviser to the PM for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON).

Tarin was the finance minister until his term expired on October 15. The constitution demands that an un-elected person can only remain a minister for a maximum of six months period.

Tarin was then appointed as adviser to the prime minister on finance on Monday.

This is not the government's first attempt to have Tarin elected.

In September, it de-seated PML-N leader and former finance minister Ishaq Dar, intending to elect Tarin to his vacant seat but the matter ended up in the court.

Earlier in May, 2018 the Supreme Court had suspended Dar's Senate membership.

The court had given orders of his suspension from Senate while hearing a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf's Nawazish Ali Pirzada.

On October 3, 2021, Dar had written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan regarding his Senate seat. The matter remains unresolved.
