Pakistani-American actor Kumail Nanjiani, who wore a purple brocade sherwani to Monday night's premier of Eternals, told The Hollywood Reporter that his mum helped him choose Umar Sayeed for the look.

Nanjiani, who was born and raised in Karachi before he moved to the US to study, stars in Eternals as Kingo, a cosmic energy powered superhero.

Eternals was released on Monday.

He told The Hollywood Reporter that he enlisted his mother Shabana to help him find a designer who would create a sherwani "because 1. They look awesome and 2. My costume in the film always reminded me of Sherwanis. And I wanted to use a designer in Pakistan, not just a Pakistani designer in the U.S. So I called my mom, she gave me names of three amazing designers in Pakistan.”

He chose Umar Sayeed, one of Pakistan's leading designers known for his intricate craftsmanship.

Nanjiani's stylist Jeanne Yang got in touch with Sayeed and they discussed options based on "the colors and the vibe" of the superhero character he plays in Eternals.

Of the sherwani Yang said: “They hand-beaded this beautiful paisley pattern in the front and they did this beautiful pattern on the back with gold thread. They made it to his exact measurements. We only had to do a few minor adjustments.”

Of the purple sherwani he wore she said: “It’s really nice that he’s able to wear something that is a traditional piece of wardrobe. I love that he has an appreciation for where he comes from.”

Nanjiani's sherwani also received love on social media.
