The novel coronavirus has dominated the world for almost the past 1.5 years and the United States has been, by far, the most adversely affected nation in the country by the deadly flu bug.

The first case of COVID-19 in the US was reported 499 days ago on 22nd January 2020. Since then, as per the statistics provided by the prestigious John Hopkins University, a staggering 33,326,354 Covid cases have been reported in the US while at least 596,434 virus-related deaths have been documented. Both these figures are outrageous.

But the good news is that the country has finally been able to contain the recent surge in new cases thanks to mass vaccination campaigns.

• In the past 24 hours, only 19,485 new cases were reported and the past 7-day average of new cases has been 15,037. It must be said that although the daily tally is still significant, it's several times less than that of numbers reported in the January peak when on average 250k-300k cases were being reported daily.

This dip in infections has been made possible primarily by two factors: lockdown and vaccinations. The Biden administration took the aggressive approach towards vaccinating the masses and the numbers show positive results. So far, over 298 million Covid vaccine doses have been administered. The number of individuals being fully vaccinated against the viral infection has crossed 137 million meaning 41.6% of the population has already been fully immunized.

Epidemiologists have warned us that the only way by which we can get rid of lethal coronavirus infection is by mass vaccinations across the globe and reaching herd immunity (i.e. immunizing 60-70% of a country's population) as early as possible. The United States looks to be well on track to attain herd immunity by the end of the year.

In the US' success in curbing the spread of Covid lies a lesson for every nation fighting the flu bug: The U.S. model shows us that vaccines work and they are the most effective and easiest way to overcome the Covid-19.
